Kiri and Phoenix (aka Kiri Maesan) is a breach mage from the Origins expansion.
Mage Overview[]
|
| Kiri's Phoenix mat |
Kiri and Phoenix is a breach mage that makes heavy use of the Swap mechanic. Kiri's swap mechanic is self-contained, so she is compatible with older sets without requiring content from Past and Future.
She has a pet Phoenix, which acts as a sort of proto-mage sidekick having his own mat, his own breach and his own deck and discard piles. The Phoenix is not considered an ally or a player for any purpose. At the end of Kiri's draw phase, the draw a card from its Phoenix deck and preps that spell on his breach. During Kiri's casting phase, that spell must be cast and then subsequently discarded to the Phoenix discard pile. The Phoenix spells can be upgraded using the Swap mechanic using Knowledge
that can be acquired using the Condensed Pyre
starter card (or other cards with Knowledge gaining effects). The three starting Phoenix spells can be upgraded for 2 knowledge tokens each, while the second level spells can be upgraded for 3 each. Phoenix Blaze
can generate Aether tokens.
Neither Kiri's nor the Phoenix breach can be destroyed.
Ability[]
| Activate During Your Main Phase: Prep the top card of the Phoenix deck to the Phoenix breach. Cast that spell. Repeat this once. |
- Kiri's ability can effectively enable casting all Phoenix spells in the same player turn (one will be cast anyway, the other two can be cast with the ability).
- Casting spells with the ability happens during the player main phase.
Setup[]
Place all the Phoenix spell cards that cost 3 or more in the Swap zone. Set the Phoenix mat to the side of Kiri's Mat. Shuffle Phoenix Spark
, Phoenix Ember
, and Phoenix Flare
and place them facedown to the left of the Phoenix mat to create the Phoenix deck.

Lore[]
"Day 82. I think one of the phoenixes has taken a liking to me. Apparently I've finally spent enough time following the flock that they no longer think I'm a threat, although the mothers will still singe me if I stray too close to a clutch. I believe that my phoenix, as I have taken to calling him in my head, is a juvenile. His secondary feathers do not yet leave the distinctive glowing trails in the air that I've documented in older members of the flock. But, most importantly, he is old enough that he has opened a breach in front of me.
I don't believe I will ever grow beyond the awe and wonder I feel each time I watch one of these birds cut through the air at such an angle as to rip between aether particles. This incredible behavior, which seems like pure magic to me, has evolved in them naturally. They use the energy created from the fission to throw fire at their prey, like a simplistic application at cooking. Though mimicking their motion, I have been able to open a "breach" of my own. It's unstable. I will certainly need more time to perfect this technique, but the potential power of this new breach magic is unimaginable."
